Isabelle Van Stavoort, de dochter van een succesvolle zakenman, wordt op klaarlichte dag ontvoerd. De daders gaan daarbij heel driest te werk en schieten Isabelles lijfwacht in koelen bloede neer. Al snel blijkt dat het niet om een gewone ontvoering gaat. Van In vermoedt zelfs dat Luc De Ghandt, Isabelles echtgenoot, betrokken zou kunnen zijn bij de zaak. Inspecteur Tom Smeekens ligt nog steeds in coma nadat hij het leven van zijn partner Jelle Cockx heeft gered. Cockx bezoekt hem dagelijks, maar de dokters kunnen niet met zekerheid zeggen of Smeekens ooit uit zijn coma zal ontwaken. De Maegd viert zijn twintigste huwelijksverjaardag. Hij heeft echter geen idee van wat hem even later te wachten staat.

Fred Sermont neemt samen met nog drie andere proefkonijnen deel aan een experiment om een nieuw medicijn te testen. Op een nacht verdwijnt hij uit het ziekenhuis, zonder enig spoor na te laten. Aanvankelijk hecht het team van Van In weinig belang aan de zaak, tot Karel Sermont, Freds tweelingbroer, komt vertellen dat er meer aan de hand is. Smeekens laat zich overhalen om met Linde naar een opvoering van 'Wachten op Godot' te gaan kijken. Om indruk te maken bereidt hij zich voor. Van In van zijn kant vindt de tijd rijp om te laten zien dat hij echt om Eva geeft. De avond verloopt echter niet zoals gepland en daar zit commissaris De Kee voor iets tussen.

Ex-paracommando Ben Van Marcke staat terecht voor de moord op zijn vrouw Elke De Jong. Van Marcke, die van in het begin zijn onschuld heeft staande gehouden, slaagt erin om nog voor het proces te ontsnappen. Van In raakt steeds meer overtuigd van Van Marckes onschuld en vreest nu dat die op zoek zal gaan naar de echte dader. De zaak brengt de speurders in een gevaarlijk parket. Voor inspecteur De Maegd loopt het bijna verkeerd af wanneer hij met de ex-para wordt geconfronteerd. Van In heeft Eva's geheim ontdekt en dat zorgt voor spanningen.

Het team van Van In wordt opgeroepen voor een moordzaak in het Europacollege in Brugge. Hans Van Acker, een van de studenten, is op zijn kamer dood aangetroffen met ingeslagen schedel. Maar dan blijkt Hans Van Acker helemaal niet te bestaan. De bal gaat pas echt aan het rollen wanneer de Staatsveiligheid het onderzoek naar zich wil toetrekken. Dat is uiteraard buiten Van In gerekend. Hij komt al snel in een kluwen van overspel en spionage terecht. Smeekens zou een carrière bij de Staatsveiligheid wel zien zitten. Maar Linde denkt daar duidelijk anders over. Cockx is terug van een korte vakantie met haar vriend, waarop blijkbaar van alles is gebeurd.
