He explains the Buddha as the teacher of enlightenment, the Dharma as the teaching and the Sangha as the historical and current community of learners. Robert Thurman is professor of Indo-Tibetan studies in the Department of Religion at Columbia University and one of the West's foremost scholars of Tibetan Buddhism.
