Release: 2008
Directors: Brian De Palma
Cast: Sahar Alloul, Happy Anderson, Lara Atalla, Francois Caillaud, Patrick Carroll, Rob Devaney, Izzy Diaz, Ty Jones, Dhiaa Kahlil, Abigail Savage, Zahra Zubaidi
Runtime: 90 min.

Brian De Palma’s ferocious Redacted is one of a number of cinematic protests against the Iraq War and the withholding of information and images about the war from the U.S. public. But it is also shares De Palma’s perennial interest in the relationship between film and violence, a relationship that has changed significantly in the real world because of the Internet, cable news, and the ubiquity of camcorders on the ground in Iraq. In a world more intent than ever on watching everything, De Palma has fashioned Redacted to look like a daisy chain of found footage taken from disparate sources. These include an American soldier’s video journal (which, not insignificantly, is also supposed to be that soldier’s audition piece for film school), a French documentary, a security camera at the edge of an army compound, and streaming video online from insurgents and military families alike. Taken together, Redacted recreates the kind of Iraq War scenes we’ve heard about for years: soldiers kidnapped or felled by booby traps, pregnant women and children shot by American guards at military checkpoints because Iraqi drivers misunderstand orders, etc. With mood and setting firmly established, Redacted then tells the story of an atrocity ripped from headlines in 2006: the rape and murder of an Iraqi teen, as well as the murder of her family, by American soldiers who then proceed to cover up their crime. Meanwhile, other soldiers, well-meaning witnesses to what happened, implode with doubt and uncertainty about what to do. In a way, Redacted is really about the paralysis of ordinary Americans confronted by the horror of our collective misjudgment about Iraq. It\'s a work of fiction using actors, meaning that De Palma employs a verisimilitude which sometimes doesn’t sit well with anyone who has seen a lot of Iraq War documentaries featuring real troops and real Iraqis. But De Palma is trying to do something very difficult, i.e., make the case that in war, truth really is the first casualty.

Release: 2008
Directors: Rob Minkoff
Cast: Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Morgan Benoit, Michael Angarano, Bingbing Li, Yifei Liu, Juana Collignon, Jack Posobiec, Thomas McDonell, Zhi Ma Gui
Runtime: 113 min.

The film opens during a battle between Sun Wukong, the Monkey King (Jet Li), and heavenly soldiers amongst the clouds. It is then revealed the sequence was a dream when a young teenager, Jason Tripitakas (Michael Angarano), awakens in his room plastered with vintage kung fu movie posters. After getting dressed, he makes his way to a pawn shop in Boston\'s China town to buy some new Kung fu DVD\'s. There, he converses with Hop (a prosthetics-laden Jackie Chan), the shop\'s elderly owner, and, while thumbing through some DVD\'s, he is drawn to room full of antiques and notices a golden staff. Hop tells him that the staff is to be delivered to its rightful owner and then closes the door. On his way back home, Jason is attacked by local bully Lupo (Morgan Benoit) and his cronies who force him to take them to the store so they can steal some money from the old man. Feeling betrayed, Hop tries to attack the thieves with the staff, but is shot by Lupo (much to both Jason and Lupo\'s cronies\' shock). He tells Jason that he must deliver the staff to its rightful owner. Jason takes the staff and runs from the thieves. On top of a building, he is surrounded by the bullies, with Lupo warning Jason that he "saw nothing" (out of fear Jason may turn them in to police). Before Lupo can shoot Jason, he is suddenly pulled off the roof by the staff and travels back through time.

When Jason wakes up he has been transported back to ancient China, dressed in old-century clothing. There he is attacked by Jade Warriors who try to take the staff away from him. He is helped by the Drunken Immortal, Lu Yan (Jackie Chan). Later that night, seated in a restaurant, Lu tells Jason a story of how the Monkey King caused havoc at the banquet celebrating the Jade Emperor\'s forthcoming 500 year period of meditation and drank of the elixir of immortality. The Emperor took a liking to the Monkey King and decided to award him a heavenly title, much to the chagrin of the Jade Warlord (Collin Chou), a heavenly general. The Emperor then left the Jade Warlord in charge of heaven before retreating to his period of seclusion. The Jade Warlord later challenged the Monkey King to a duel, and turned him into stone by tricking the Monkey King to set aside his magic staff. But before he was fully immobilized, the Monkey King cast his staff into the mundane world. Lu ends the tale by stating a person known as the "Seeker" will be the person to find the staff and free the Monkey King. Lu and Jason then get into a fight with the Jade Warriors who track them to the restaurant and are saved by a mysterious woman, who turns out to be the Orphaned Warrior, Golden Sparrow (Liu Yi Fei). Golden Sparrow\'s family was killed by the Jade Warlord, and she has vowed vengeance against him.

The Jade Warlord is notified by his men that they have seen the magical staff. The Jade Warlord then sends his bounty hunter, the white-haired assassin Ni-Chang (Li Bingbing), to retrieve it for him. When Jason wakes up in the morning he is attacked by a person dressed in white clothes, who takes the staff away. Jason, Lu, and Golden Sparrow follow the trail of the mysterious man. They reach upon a temple where the man is meditating. There, Lu confronts the Silent Monk (Jet Li), who was the mysterious man. There they both fight for the staff. The Silent Monk later learns that the staff is meant for the traveler. The four head towards the Five Elements Mountain in a quest to free the Monkey King and destroy the rule of the Jade Warlord.

On the way to the Mountain, Lu and the Silent Monk teach Jason Kung Fu. After crossing a great desert, they are attacked by Ni-Chang and the Jade Warriors, but the four escape on their horses with the staff intact. Ni-Chang fires an arrow into the air after them, and Lu is hit with the arrow and falls from his horse. They take refuge in a monastery where they find out that only the elixir of immortality from the Jade Warlord will heal Lu from his mortal wound. Jason wanting to help Lu, heads toward the palace with the staff to exchange it for the elixir. Once at the palace he learns that the elixir was promised to Ni-Chang if she brought back the staff, but since Jason brought it, he has to fight Ni-Chang to death, the winner getting the elixir. The Silent Monk discovers that Jason has left with the staff and pursues Jason along with Golden Sparrow. Back at the palace, Jason and Ni-Chang fight. Though Jason had developed some skill in Kung Fu, the more experienced Ni-Chang easily defeats him. But before she can kill him, the Jade Warlord orders her to stop and, instead, sets his own men on Jason. The boy\'s life is once again saved when the Silent Monk and Golden Sparrow arrive (with Lu Yan in the rear being carried by monks from the monastery who join in the fight with the Jade Army with their staffs) and intervene. The Silent Monk duels the Jade Warlord while Golden Sparrow fights Ni-Chang. During the fight, Jason manages to grab the elixir and throws it to Lu Yan, who drinks it and regains his strength and energy. Lu then fights Ni-Chang on the balcony. The Silent Monk is mortally wounded during his battle with the Jade Warlord and throws the staff to Jason. Jason takes the staff and frees the Monkey King from his statue form. The Silent Monk dies from injuries and reverts into a golden hair, revealing him to be a magical human familiar created by the Monkey King prior to his imprisonment. The fight between the Monkey King and the Jade Warlord commences. Golden Sparrow tries to kill The Jade Warlord, but is killed instead. After a long battle, Jason is able to kill the Jade Warlord and Lu Yan kills Ni-Chang. He is then thanked by the Jade Emperor for his bravery and fulfilling the people\'s prophecy. He is then transported back to modern day Boston.

When Jason wakes up, he is lying flat on the ground below the building he supposedly fell from and is attacked by Lupo\'s gang, but this time he uses his newfound Kung Fu skills, fights back, and defeats Lupo single-handedly. He then goes to see if Hop is alright (the medics state that the bullet missed his heart), and Hop responds to Jason, stating that he is immortal, leaving it questionable whether Hop is Lu Yan or not (The pawn shop, as seen at the beginning of the movie, is named Lu Yan\'s Pawn Shop). Hop is taken to the hospital, before Jason leaves the scene, he sees a girl who looks like Golden Sparrow. She thanks him for being brave and tells him she will see him later. She then goes into her store (Golden Sparrow). Jason, surprised but delighted to see her, leaves and goes home, where he practices his Kung Fu on the roof with a staff.

 Release: 2008
Directors: Robert Luketic
Cast: Jim Sturgess, Kevin Spacey, Kate Bosworth, Aaron Yoo, Liza Lapira, Laurence Fishburne, Jack McGee, Sam Golzari, Josh Gad, Helen Carey, Jack Gilpin, Donna Lows,
Runtime: 123 min.

Ben Campbell (Jim Sturgess), based on the real life Massachusetts Institute of Technology card-counter Jeff Ma, is an MIT pre-med student who applies for the prestigious Robinson Scholarship, a full scholarship to Harvard Medical School. Despite Ben\'s nearly flawless resume, the official administering the scholarship tells Ben that his application essay must "dazzle" him in order to win it. Ben knows he doesn\'t have what it takes to win the Robinson Scholarship. The most exciting thing going on in his life is a "209 competition" where him and his two friends are building a self-navigating GPS wheel. While at the gym, Ben\'s friend Miles spots Jill Taylor, the hottest girl at MIT. Miles jokingly tells Ben to ask out Jill if he wants a "true life experience." Ben can\'t get past the fact that money is the only thing holding him back from fulfilling his dreams of Harvard Med.

In his non-linear equations class, Ben impresses his professor, Mickey Rosa (Kevin Spacey) by solving the famous Monty Hall Problem (through logic and reason, not emotion like most people). One night while Ben is studying, Fisher (Jacob Pitts) tells him to come with him. He leads Ben to a card counting session led by Mickey. His team travels to Las Vegas every weekend to count cards and win money, which the members then split. Other members of the team are Ben\'s crush Jill (Kate Bosworth), Choi (Aaron Yoo), and Kianna (Liza Lapira). Micky needs someone to replace former big player (Jimmy) who left for Google, and thinks Ben is the perfect person for the open spot. Micky tells Ben of how much money he\'ll make and how much fun he\'ll have by joining the team. Ben initially declines Micky\'s offer. Micky then tells Ben to keep what he learned tonight private, and that he\'d really hate to lose one of his new favorite students.

Later at J. Press, Ben\'s workplace, he impresses two customers by adding up a complex set of numbers (displaying his extraordinary talent for mathematics). As he turns around, he is greeted by Jill, who seductively persuades Ben to come back and join the team for one of their future trips to Vegas. Ben is enticed by Jill and her enthusiasm for Vegas. Later that night during a card counting session, Micky is pressing his players hard, and all of them are having trouble keeping count. Ben slips in unnoticed and hears Micky summing up the cards that were drawn. To the team\'s surprise, Ben answers 13, and he is correct. Once Ben joins the team, he spends all of his time refining his counting skills, learning basic strategy, and the team\'s signals and codes. Ben is convinced that joining the team is the best way to save 300,000 dollars, the amount he needs for med school.

Ben shows some concern about what the team is doing. He talks to Micky, who assures him that card counting is completely safe and legal. Unfortunately Micky wasn\'t telling the whole truth. As Ben continues to prove himself, the team decides that he is ready for the final test. Ben is asked to show up in an underground casino located in Boston\'s China Town. While there, Ben is expected to play the part. Ben plays as he should, but is suddenly kidnapped by two men and brought into a back room. When he\'s there, he hears the question "what\'s the count?" Ben nervously answers "18." The bag is lifted off of Ben, and the team congratulates him for making the team. Shortly after, Micky reveals to Ben that he\'s the new big player, replacing Jimmy. Ben is hesitant, as he is still new to the game. Micky assures Ben that he was born to do this, that his mind is like a pentium chip. Micky tells Ben that what they are doing is counting cards, not gambling. Micky wants reassurance that Ben will use his head and play the game logically, not emotionally. Ben confirms that he\'ll play according to the rules.

When Ben gets to Vegas, he easily plays the part of big player. In his first night, he outperforms the other big player (Fisher), who is already showing signs of jealousy against his team mate. Ben is impressed by his first weekend in Sin City, while his life back in Boston is only starting to deteriorate. Ben\'s friends question where he was over the weekend, and Ben claims that he went to New Hampshire. Later, Ben attempts to show off by approaching Jill and buying her a beer. His friends are astonished, and are already noticing changes in Ben\'s personality. Ben continues to spend his weekends in Vegas, and leaves his friends and the 209 competition behind him. In Vegas, Ben is getting closer and closer to his love interest Jill. One night at Foxx strip club, Ben is approached by Jill. The two jokingly talk using their false identies. They then share a kiss that begins to seal their relationship. Ben is having a blast with the team, but unknowingly he is being watched by a sinister casino security guard named Cole Williams(Laurence Fishburne).

As Ben gets closer to Jill and more involved in card counting his relationship with his friends slowly starts to dwindle away. Ben is confronted by his friends in Boston. His friends ask him about his conversation with Micky. Ben lies, and Miles easily detects his insincerity. His friends think that Ben is on drugs or that his friendship with Jill is causing him to ignore them. Ben simply blows them off, seeing them as only taking up his time. While visiting his mother, he is presented by her with a 68,000 dollar check. Ben is disgruntled, knowing his mother worked hard for this money. He then lies to her, and tells her that he won the Robinson Scholarship. Ben believes that all the money he needs can be won counting cards.

Ben continues his hot streak in Vegas, and Fisher starts to get irritated by Ben\'s ability at card counting. One night, Fisher joins the same table and tries to throw Ben off his game. Fisher claims that Ben looks familiar, like the autistic character from the movie Rainman. A couple join the black jack table between Fisher and Ben. While Fisher is taunting Ben, he accidently spills a drink on the female next to him, and her boyfriend wrestles Fisher to the ground and pulls out a gun. A gun shot is fired in the air, and people start to storm out of the casino. Later at the Foxx strip club, both Ben and Micky are furious at Fisher\'s childish behavior. Micky kicks Fisher off the team, threatening him if he doesn\'t leave. Because of the rampage at the casino, Micky and the team are forced to cash in their winnings before the casino has the chance to change the chips (due to stolen chips after the gun fire was shot). Ben grins and points to the strippers. Ben says that the cameras at the casino won\'t detect any foul play, and think the strippers are cashing in tips from customers. Micky smiles, and calls Ben a genius.

Back at home, Ben is late to a meeting with his two friends for the 209 competition. When he gets there, they find out that Ben purchased the incorrect microchip to run the self-navigating wheel. Angry at Ben\'s lack of interest, Miles throws Ben off the team. Ben insults his friends, and angrily walks away. In Vegas, Ben\'s arrogance continues to show. After losing a hand to the dealer\'s black jack(21), he is signaled to leave the table by Kianna. Ben feels confident in his ability, and decides to risk the rest of his money. Jill notices, and tries to pull Ben away from the table. Ben continues to play regardless, and the dealer pulls out a second black jack(21), essentially forcing Ben to quit. As the team gets back to the room, Micky becomes furious at Ben. Micky tells Ben that he let his emotions get the best of him, and that he was gambling, not card counting. Ben apologizes, but Micky is still very upset. Micky tells Ben that he is going to pay him everything he lost that night. Ben refuses, saying that the money he has was for Harvard. Micky tells Ben that he\'s going to pay him back whether he likes it or not, and storms out of the room. The team is shaken up by Micky\'s depature, but Ben thinks he can lead the team, and win what he lost that night. Ben convinces Choi to join him, while Kianna and Jill reluctantly follow. As the team continues to make their mark on Vegas without Micky, Micky is shown reporting the team to security. Ben is approached by Cole Williams and his sidekick, who ask him to join them in the back room. While there, Cole begins to beat Ben and tells him he is no longer allowed in any of his casinos.

Back at home, Ben hits the lowest point during his tenure on the team. He comes home bruised up, and finds a notice telling him that received an incomplete in one of his classes and that he can no longer graduate from MIT. Afterwards, he finds out that his room was broken into and that all the money he saved for Harvard was gone. In class, Micky acts nonchalant, even with Ben there. Ben strikes up a conversation about a stolen publication, and Micky answers his question by saying that without the evidence, it\'s like it never happened. Ben then realizes that he has lost everything, and approaches Jill at her apartment. Ben apologizes and tells Jill that he doesn\'t want to lose her with everything else. Ben also decides to attend the 209 competition, and he watches his friends Miles and Cam win. Later he apologizes to Miles, who accepts the apology (claiming that for Jill Taylor and money, he would\'ve done the same). Miles asks Ben what he\'s going to do next, Ben looks at Miles as the scene gets cut. Later, Ben approaches Micky at an alumni dinner, asking him to rejoin the team. Micky doesn\'t sound interested, but Ben asks Micky to imagine how much money they could win together with him being the other big player. With facial recognition software taking over at many casinos, Micky knows this may be his last chance to strike it rich in Vegas.

As the team arrives in Vegas, Micky gives a speech, asking his team to forget about the past. Knowing that some members have already been spotted by the casino personnel, Ben and Micky hit the black jack tables in disguise. Working together, with two big players, Ben and Micky are making a fortune. Ben shouts out, splitting 10\'s again, revealing that the deck is heavy and that him and Micky both have hot hands. But their luck starts to run out. Jill signals to leave the table now, and Cole Williams is seen storming towards them. Micky, Ben and Jill start to run, and decide to split up, Micky going in one direction and Ben and Jill going in the other direction. Micky tells Ben to throw him the bag, gets it, and runs out as fast as possible. Ben and Jill run in the other direction and eventually lose their chasers. Micky on the other hand hops into a limo to find out that the bag he has is filled with chocolate coins. It is then revealed that Ben and Jill took two bags with them, one of them a fake to give to Micky. The movie then flashes back to the backroom beating scene of Ben. As Cole winds up to punch Ben in the face (with a hand full of bruising rings on his fingers), he stops. He then tells Ben how he\'s been chasing Micky for years. Micky was the best counter during his time, taking beatings left and right and persistently coming back. The last time Cole saw Micky was the night he took one of Cole\'s casinos for 7 digits. Consequently, that was the same night Cole lost his job. Fast forwarding in time, it is revealed that Cole\'s assistant is in the passenger seat of the limo. As Ben and Jill are seen strolling out of the casino. They are approached by Cole who tells Dr. Campbell that he did a job well done, and that the whole MIT thing will work out for him. As Ben and Jill start to leave, Cole tells Ben to leave the money, and flashes a gun at them. Jill encourages Ben to give him the money, and Ben reluctantly agrees. Ben is upset, knowing that he went through hell to earn that money.

Back in Boston, things are better for Ben. He gets his friends back, and reveals his lies to his mother(and is forgiven). Ben continues with the story by saying that he went to Vegas 17 times using a new skill he had just learned. During that time he won hundreds of thousands of dollars, got beat down by an old school casino thug. He had his money stolen from him twice, and (well) he only landed the hottest girl at MIT. The camera then flashes back to Ben sitting in the administrator\'s office for the Robinson Scholarship. The Harvard dean looks in awe of Ben\'s amazing story, clearly dazzled. During the final scenes, Ben quotes his former non-linear equations professor by saying that it\'s important to always account for variable change. The last scene shows Ben walking up the steps of Harvard Medical School, all of his dreams fulfilled!

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story

 Release: 2007
Directors: Jake Kasdan
Cast: John C. Reilly, Jenna Fischer, Raymond J. Barry, Margo Martindale, Chip Hormess, Conner Rayburn, Matt Besser, David Krumholtz, Nat Faxon
Runtime: 120 min.

Fictional musician Dewey Cox begins his quest for greatness from humble beginnings in Springberry, Alabama. While playing with his brother Nate in a sequence of needlessly careless and dangerous acts, he accidentally cuts his brother in half at the waist (a reference to Johnny Cash\'s older brother Jack, who was almost cut in half by a table saw and died from his injuries). This leads Dewey\'s father to frequently repeat the phrase "The wrong kid died." It is this traumatic event that motivates Dewey to rise to stardom and "be double great for the both of them." (which is also a reference to Elvis Presley, whose twin brother was stillborn), while at the same time making him lose his sense of smell. After his brother\'s death is announced by a physician making a housecall, his mother sends him to the local store to buy a candle. There, he meets a black blues guitarist, who lets Dewey play his guitar. Dewey is a natural. The scene was likely a reference to country icon Hank Williams, who was introduced to the guitar by a black blues guitarist Rufus Payne.

After a successful, yet controversial, talent show performance that is reminiscent of an early, sugary Buddy Holly rock song, a then 14 year old Dewey decides to leave Springberry with his 12 year-old girlfriend Edith (Kristen Wiig) They soon marry and Edith begins to criticize Dewey and insist that his dream of being a musician will never happen. Inspired, Dewey then delivers the "Walk Hard" speech, which is the origin of the lyrics of his number one hit record. While working at a nightclub, Dewey gets a break when he replaces singer Bobby Shad (Craig Robinson) at the last minute, much to the delight of the Hasidic Jewish executives at the show. Dewey then is brought to the studio where he first records "Walk Hard."

Within 35 minutes, the song becomes a hit, and Dewey begins to get caught up in the fame of rock and roll. He starts to hang out with musicians such as Elvis Presley and later, The Beatles. With the addition of backing singer Darlene Madison, (Jenna Fischer) Dewey produces more hit records. Around this time, drummer Sam (Tim Meadows) introduces Dewey to marijuana, which causes him to become unfaithful to his first wife Edith in more ways than one. Pa then returns to inform Dewey that Dewey\'s mother has passed away. Pa manages to make Dewey feel responsible for her death, contributing to an already high level of inner turmoil. He then gets married to Darlene while still married to Edith, which leads to both of them leaving him. Dewey eventually is busted after purchasing cocaine from an undercover cop and serves time in jail before Darlene returns.

They then move to Berkeley, California in 1966 at the beginning of the \'60s counterculture movement. During a visit with The Beatles in India, Dewey and Darlene take LSD, which causes Dewey to lose touch with reality yet again. Dewey becomes obsessed with every aspect of the recording process and is completely consumed with creating his masterpiece. In a reference to the landmark album Pet Sounds, a live goat is literally bleating on the track. Darlene is unable to deal with Dewey\'s insanity and leaves him again. After another stay in jail and rehab, Dewey is next seen jogging into the 1970s. Now working on a variety television show (which could be a reference to Elvis\' Las Vegas era), Dewey continues to try to write a masterpiece for his brother. However, Dewey comes to realize what is most important and begins to focus on spending time with his numerous children.

Darlene then returns once again, this time in 1992 as Dewey begins his senior years. Then, in 2007, Dewey becomes popular with younger listeners through rapper Lil\' Nutzzak\'s remix of "Walk Hard," Dewey is awarded a lifetime achievement award. He is finally able to fulfill his wish of creating one great masterpiece with his final song "Beautiful Ride." He dies three minutes after the performance.
