The stable wormhole discovered by the Deep Space Nine crew is known to the Bajoran people as the Celestial Temple of their Prophets. Sisko, as discoverer of the wormhole and its inhabitants, is therefore the Emissary of Bajoran prophesy. The wormhole's other end is in the Gamma Quadrant, halfway around the galaxy from Bajor. That section of space is dominated by the malevolent Dominion. The Dominion is led by the Changelings, the race of shapeshifters to which Odo belongs. As of the beginning of the sixth season, Cardassia has joined the Dominion, and together they are waging war on the Federation and their Klingon allies. The war is quickly becoming the most costly war ever for the Federation, and the Deep Space Nine crew must fight to protect their way of life.

The great thing about the Star Trek franchise is that it behaves like a big budget movie. It understands also about franchising. Shows derived from the same universe as the original show have to behave like a sequel to a movie and follow all or any of the cardinal rules to actually work. One of those rules is to actually beocmedifferent and stand on it's own two feet. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine does all that and is so good it actually (or almost) over tops the original and Next Generation. This show like most great sequels was (and sometimes still is) unfairly shunned, people say it's boring because no one goes enough places. That's a strange argument because take the original Star Trek shows, each episode takes place most of the time on the ship, no one gets out for ten or fifteen minutes at times. Or even there are episodes where they don't get out of ship at all. But that doesn't make a show boring.
Basically you can say it has a bit of that classic western like format where a set of good guys all with different occupations have to do their best to defend the town from anyone evil that comes their way, as well as keep the public happy. It's that same western but done sci-fi style. It's interesting seeing how a giant star-base can act as a small town, with your usually essentials like a bar, recreation center in the form of a holo suite, a city hall in the form of a conference room to talk intergalactic political relations, you name it or see it and it's there.
Seasons 1-3 are of little worth so you can skip them if you want. It was Seasons 4 through 7 that really put this show into warp speed and the rest as they say is history.
The greatest things about the show are one it's experimental, it's not afraid most of the time creating episodes that are untrek like and yet they help expand on the Trek universe, have a little more fun, and most importantly it helps give depth to many of the characters. And thats the most important thing about the show as well as the central focus. Indded the crew is a very diverse mix from both race and alien, just as diverse as the film Crash. Yet, each and everyone of these characters actually fell like real people. From their interactions straight down to their cultures and development. Characters like Rom whom on the outside might seem and act like a nervous wreck and talks a little like Bullwinkle the Moose. But underneath it all he's actually a man with confidence and strength, even if he doesn't know it. Chief O Brien an Irish man whom is funny, gruff, smart, and a warm hearted family man, but is almost nothing without his duo buddy Bashir whom is a genetically enhanced human being or Persican decent. Also smart funny, and has a Bond like charm. Down to my favorite character and couple in the show, Odo who is a shape shifter, a bit stiff yet has humane sensibility and feelings for the beautiful Bajoran Major Kira whom was an ex terrorist, has religious Christian like beliefs, tough, but also vulnerable. Then there's Captain Sisko whom at least on 4-7th season turned out to be a great character. Hard as nails, will break the rules to win, father, as well as Christ like figure.
Two more things, the shows's story actually develops, in the Next Gerneration show the trouble with it was it's randomness, as if the direction of the story couldn't really decide where to actually go. But in this show there is a real direction making it a sci-fi epic. And it dealt with deep concepts like religion, culture, family, heroism, self-development and discovery, and racism.
After this show unfortunately it was followed by two rather unnecessary sequels which wern't very good. The problem with Voyger and Enterprise was the format wasn't different, stories felt rather uninspired, and some of the characters felt wooden. If only those two shows followed Deep Space Nine's example then their ship's wouldn't be dead in space.
So, come and visit Deep Space Nine. The mission isn't just to boldly go where no man has gone before but also to understand different cultures and races that man hasn't encountered before.
