It really doesn't get much better than this in terms of a martial arts film. This movie is not about the actors or the script. It is about the feeling of success through hard training. It is about pushing the limits and growing beyond your potential. It is about the philosophy of maximizing your ability and being the true winner even in defeat. The outcome is secondary as long as you give your best. This is the zen of Best of the Best. We all know that this movie was not made to win academy awards or other awards for that matter. It was made for a totally different group of consumers. People that are into martial arts and athletics in general. There is a feeling that all athletes can relate through this film. Besides, you can not watch this film with a straight face. At least I can't. The fight sequences are pretty decent considering the cast involved. It is not hard to see that Philip Rhee and the Korean team were the only actors with real martial arts background in this movie. James Earl Jones is agreeable as Coach Couzo.
This movie is solid gold from the 80's. |
