Internationally-renowned director Shunji Iwai finds new cinematic territory in his touching and unexpected film Picnic. Tadanobu Asano, Chara and Koichi Hasizume star as Tsumiji, Coco, and Satoru, three mental patients who leave their institution with the intention of witnessing the end of the world. Believing the end is nigh, the three walk along the tops of the walls of the city, looking for the perfect picnic spot at which to view the apocalypse. But surprises and discoveries await them, along with a subtle allegory about the society in which we live. Like many of Shunji Iwai's other directorial efforts (Swallowtail Butterfly, Love Letter), Picnic finds poetry and beauty in atmosphere and cinematic grace, and manages to deliver its messages in subtle, wonderfully involving style. Picnic is a beautifully made and cinematically accomplished motion picture from a modern master of Japanese cinema. The story is about three mental patients (two men and one woman) going on a trip to watch the end of the world.  They aren't allowed out of the institution, so they walk on top of the concrete wall which somehow never ends, going all the way through the city, ending as a lighthouse pier extending into the sea.
