The first version stayed true to Helen North Beardsely's story. As a movie, it was an endearing pairing of two Hollywood luminaries who had great material to work with. It brought into the forefront trivial issues as how groceries for such a huge household were made, and how sometimes carrying your father's last name could sometimes be viewed as unacceptable by nitpickers. Not a technical marvel, it was a cool breeze of a film.
This second -- and hopefully, last -- version of YOURS, MINE, AND OURS attempts to bring a kiddie sensibility into the works, which means, the kids will now have a lot more to do, even to a point that they drive the entire, colorless plot which is but a passing shadow of the original. The director never takes time to establish anything other than a wham-bam-thank you ma'am introduction to Helen and Frank Beardsley's courtship and even adds a new one: that they were high-school but did not hook up. Does it add any new layers to the story? Well, for that matter, have any cows jumped over the Moon lately?
Okay, okay. Maybe I'm being a little too cynical. But come on, even a loose remake, a re-working, re-imagining -- whatever you will -- should have something the viewer could hold onto. There is nothing here: no sense of the visual, framing, introduction, conclusion, light or shadow. Rene Russo and Dennis Quaid -- God help them -- can't bring what Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda (both about ten years older and looking it) did in the first. The roles should have been for actors who could bring the balance of zaniness and befuddled control: maybe Goldie Hawn and Steve Martin? (It's only too bad that he was already in CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN.) Anyone but these two, even though they both look great, especially Quaid. I noticed.
Another example of what tampering with a product that was fine as it was and updating it for today's superficial sensibilities can do. This is something for a Saturday morning with the kids while the coffee brews itself , or as background noise while you do your work and the kids are at home after school. Instant coffee, instant movie, forgettable in an instant. |

| This "re-casting" of the family favorite of Yours, Mine, and Ours can't even shake a stick at the original with Fonda and Ball. Granted while the original was contemporary for the day that it was made the dialog, and the family situations dealing with a large family are either ad voided or watered down to a point of non-existence. Koodos for Quaid for his role of the bewildered father. Quaid tries to make the role work with the weak script that he got, but for what he got he did an outstanding job. The 2005 "re-casting" of the situations was nothing more than politically correct mumbo jumbo that missed the mark of the comedic timing. All of it was turned into a slapstick dribble with obvious setups from the production team. They took a great crafted movie and watered it down to a dribble that only family with young kids will like. Yes, the original is dated, but we can still connect with the themes and the characters while the 2005 VERSION OF YOURS, MINE, AND OURS WILL BE LONG Forgotten WHILE THE ORIGINAL REMAINS FRESH. |
