The film revolves around Erin Grant (Moore), a former FBI secretary, who loses custody of her young daughter Angela to her ex-husband Darrell. In order to afford an appeal, Erin becomes a stripper at the Eager Beaver, a Miami strip club. A Congressman named David Dilbeck (Reynolds) visits the club and immediately begins to adore Grant. Aware of Dilbeck’s embarrassing indulgences, another Eager Beaver patron approaches Erin with a plan to manipulate the Congressman to settle the custody dispute in Erin’s favour. However, Dilbeck has powerful business connections who want to ensure he remains in office. Consequently, those who can embarrass him in an election are murdered. Meanwhile, Erin retrieves her daughter from her negligent husband.Dilbeck’s personal interest in Erin persists, and she is invited to perform privately for him. He asks her to become his lover and later his wife, despite his staff’s concerns that she knows too much information. A debate occurs as to whether to kill Erin or simply keep her quiet by threatening to take away her daughter. However, Erin and a police officer begin to suspect the Congressman’s guilt in the murders, and Erin concocts a plan to bring the Congressman to justice. She tricks him into confessing on tape, and he is soon after arrested. Thus, Erin regains full custody of Angela, and Darrell returns to prison.

For a movie with more bare breasts than any two tattered issues of “Playboy” and “Hustler,” “Striptease” is the flattest offering of the year. Neither sexy, funny, dramatic, or even slightly bearable, what this film cries out for are the Disney cartoonists that drew Demi Moore in “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” Only then might we have experienced some worthwhile dancing and possibly some soul.
Based on the novel “Strip Tease” by Carl Hiaasen, the ridiculous story has Moore portraying Erin Grant, an FBI secretary turned stripper. She lost her desk job because her spouse Darrell is a druggie lowlife. To make things worse as the film opens, Darrell gains custody of their seven-year-old daughter Angela (Rumer Willis) and uses her to steal wheelchairs from hospitals.
As a stripper, Erin is supposedly so sensational that to witness her twitch is instant adoration. One night one of her most ardent fans, a Jerry Killian, observes a drunk Congressman David Dilbeck (Burt Reynolds), hitting a customer on the head with a liquor bottle. Why? The lout had interfered with Erin’s act. . Hey, why not blackmail Dilbeck into helping Erin get her child back? Good idea, except soon the body counts start rising but not as fast as the career counts.
This film is sleazy in a trruly unappetizing way. And although I never thought I could say this in this lifetime, “Striptease” makes “Showgirls” seem like a work of an art.
There’s a scene where Moore just showered and is dancing around her house attired in towel. She stands in front of a mirror and flashes her breasts. It’s embarrassing. There is no point here except to titillate, and Moore fails. She’s so self-conscious and her undulating so colorless, that you feel humiliated for her. Later, on stage, Moore grasps a necktie and uses it as a scrub brush between her legs. There are also numerous shots of her legs spreads galore and her bosoms pointing here and there, all displayed without sensuousness, wit or even plain honest sexuality.
Moore is up on screen as a prostitute not as an actress. She’s sold her body for $12 million. Castle Rock has been taken. We're lucky. We're only losing two hours and the cost of entry.
As for the rest cast, they hardly rise to Moore’s level. Armand Assante as Lt. Al Garcia never allows his acting to stop you from wondering whether his tan is real or not. Burt Reynolds seems like he wandered in from a bad TV show of the sixties. His wig from a bad TV show of the fifties. The other strippers here can barely talk, and when a boa constrictor tries to knock one off, you can clearly understand his kind intentions. If only Columbia Pictures and Castle Rock had some, too.
