The Blind Side comments / review

There were probably 58 different things I would have preferred to do this past Saturday night than see The Blind Side. The previews made it seem like the type of movie I usually hate: cheesy, over-dramatic, and feel-good. I was sure it would try to make me cry but instead would make me cringe.

The brief scenes in the trailer of Sandra Bullock playing a blond woman taking on gangsters and football coaches felt forced and fake. And a movie about a nice, white family taking in and caring for a troubled, black youth (have we ever seen a movie where the opposite happens?) was so aligned with the stereotype of typical, Hollywood trash, that my interest in seeing it in theaters was close to zero, despite its marketing as a “football movie.” Yet, with the combination of a group of friends who were going to see it, and the promise that we would get to eat pizza beforehand, I spent my Saturday night watching Sandra Bullock star in The Blind Side. And here’s the kicker: I loved it.

Now, before I continue, let me clarify. The Blind Side is by no means a “great movie” in the sense that you must make sure to see it or that it should get any consideration for any major awards. It wasn’t that kind of movie. But for that next category of movie, right below the Oscar-types, I usually ask myself three questions to ascertain whether it was good or not: Did it entertain me? Did it make me think? Did it make me feel? The Blind Side did all three.

Quinton Aaron was lovable and charming in his role as Michael Oher. Early on in the movie, he carries scenes in which he doesn’t even say a word. Once his character opens up and starts talking, though, it doesn’t take long to fall in love with him. And Jae Head, as S.J. Tuohy, Michael’s young step-brother, delivered the most hilarious performance by a child actor since Jonathan Lipnicki in Jerry Maguire. But the real attention, and rightfully so, has gone to Sandra Bullock for her portrayal of Leigh Anne Tuohy in what many critics have called the greatest performance of her career. Now to be fair, the phrase “greatest performance of Sandra Bullock’s acting career” should be used in roughly the same way as “greatest day of George W. Bush’s presidency.” It has had some decent moments and there will always be some rare fringe supporters who insist it’s been better than people give it credit for, but most people generally agree that it has sucked. But this was a rare gem for Bullock. Remember that scene from the trailer I referenced in the opening paragraph? The one where she accosts a group of ghetto gangsters sitting on a stoop in the projects and hollers “you threaten my son, you threaten me?” Well, once you get to know her character and she endears herself to you as a tough as nails southern mom who doesn’t take shit from anyone and always gets what she wants, she actually pulls it off.

More so than just being entertaining, The Blind Side tackles and makes you consider some serious subjects: abuse, poverty, race. It makes you realize that for every Michael Oher who has the fortune of being athletically gifted and of being taken in by a wealthy family, there are literally thousands of young children in the same position who aren’t so lucky. It makes you see how traumatizing and abusive and neglectful childhood can be to otherwise good, smart, normal children.

But most of all, The Blind Side makes you feel. And it makes you feel good. For Michael. For the Tuohys. For all the people who helped Oher and whose lives were enriched from having him in theirs. When, in the movie’s closing moments, the screen shows real-life footage of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announcing the Baltimore Ravens’ selection of University of Mississippi tackle Michael Oher with the 23rd overall selection, the chills going up my spine were very real. It was at that moment that I knew that Michael Oher would always be a player I would be aware of and root for (indeed, I was looking for him on nearly every Baltimore offensive play in their game against the Steelers on Sunday night.) And if a movie can impact the way I follow football, you know they did something right.
