Victorian grave robber Arthur Blake confesses the events that landed him in jail to Father Duffy. He and his partner Willie Grimes started out stealing corpses for the immoral anatomist Dr Quint who was blackmailing them. One day they discover a corpse buried at a crossroads. When they dig it up and remove the stake pinning it down they discover it is a vampire. They send the corpse to Quint and it kills him after he removes the stake. They come into conflict with a rival gang led by Cornelius Murphy, a knife-wielding corpsegrinder who gets high on ground-up bones, after Arthur steals the frozen corpse of an extraterrestrial which he mistook for a circus freak. Later, at their hangout the Fortune of War Arthur meets a prostitute called Fanny and gives her a job. The bartender reveals a ship containing three zombies was wrecked on rocks off the isle of Langol. Fanny persuades Arthur and a reluctant Willie to row over there and steal the zombies from the Murphy gang. She kills Cornelius’s henchman Bulger: a man with dog teeth who lost his original teeth in a street fight. The zombie escapes from its crate and bites Willie before being knocked into a cage. Cornelius shows up with his second in command Valentine: a woman who wears a mask to conceal her burned face. Cornelius kills Fanny and ties Willie and Arthur to the cage, intending to drag them back to the mainland and sell their corpses. The zombie breaks out and kills Valentine. Another zombie kills Cornelius, enabling Arthur and Willie to escape. Back in the prison cell Father Duffy reveals that he is Cornelius’s father and tries to kill Arthur with a spiked metal glove. Arthur is saved when the undead Willie (who survived his beheading) kills Duffy and they leave the jail. Willie then announces he is feeling peckish and chases Arthur.
