This is an English language film (made in America) adapted from a novel by German author Erich Maria Remarque. The film follows a group of German schoolboys, talked into enlisting at the beginning of World War 1 by their jingoistic teacher. The story is told entirely through the experiences of the young German recruits and highlights the tragedy of war through the eyes of individuals. As the boys witness death and mutilation all around them, any preconceptions about "the enemy" and the "rights and wrongs" of the conflict disappear, leaving them angry and bewildered. This is highlighted in the scene where Paul mortally wounds a French soldier and then weeps bitterly as he fights to save his life while trapped in a shell crater with the body. The film is not about heroism but about drudgery and futility and the gulf between the concept of war and the actuality. |

First of all let me say that this is a very good, very well done, and very powerful film. For its time, the way they put the scenes together is amazing, and it conveys a good idea of the historical battles of WWI.
However, I do have a major problem with the makers of this movie. I have read the original book, and I believe that the central message was distorted in the film for the makers own political ideas. The film here is very anti-war in general, whereas the novel was speaking out against the futility of the style of fighting in WWI, where thousands were killed in an instant to gain three inches. Eric Remarques was not a pacifist, he fully understood that war is a necessary evil. Yet, his central message was distorted in the movie for the sake of creating a political soapbox, much similar to what was done with "Jarhead".
Although the movie will inevitably be different than the book, I believe that when you base a movie off a novel, you have an obligation to stay true to the central idea, not exploit it for your own agenda. |
