The story of the twilight years of tobacco millionairess Doris Duke (Sarandon) and her relationship with her gay butler (Fiennes), whom she named the executor of her entire fortune. A loosely based, sympathetic portrayal of the relationship between tobacco heiress Doris Duke (1912-1993) -- think Duke University -- and her shy Irish butler, Bernard Lafferty. In the first scenes, the icy and mercurial Duke (Sarandon) fires her current butler for serving a chilled cantaloupe. The agency sends Lafferty (Fiennes), formerly household staff to entertainment stars Liz Taylor and Peggy Lee, with glowing their references. Fresh out of rehab, he's an alcoholic on the mend and treads lightly in her presence as he learns her needs and moods, sometimes also thoroughly soaked through with booze. Gradually “Rafferty”--as she mistakenly calls him at first then later as jesting nickname-- succumbs to her urgings to loosen up to become her openly gay alter ego as she soars through her high life. That allows her the freedom to travel around the world, sleep with young men of talent, make shrewd decisions quickly, and manage her fortune as expertly as her vast greenhouse of orchids. Bernard manages, with equal precision, her New Jersey estate. He becomes her expert butler and companion, friend and caretaker, intimate confidante (both to her secrets and revealing his own), first among equals in those close to her. His role in her life expands and just as quickly, her lawyer questions his motives, but Bernard eventually refuses even a half million dollar payoff to disappear; Doris has given him a bigger life than any he’s lived with before. The downfall comes after longing looks upon her expansive and excellent wine cellar when Bernard --a man whose passion for drink matches her passion for life--falls off the wagon. She sends him to rehab, keeps him at arm’s length till she is sure she can trust him again, then suffers a stroke which immediately returns him as her full time nurse. He follows her last wishes exactly--his final act as butler and caretaker--after she dies and he’s named executor of her estate. Three years later he too dies, as a result of the ravages of alcoholism. And to pay her back for all she gave him, Bernard wills his entire estate to her foundation.
