Having escaped her abusive ex-husband Goss, recently released from state prison, Agnes, a lonely waitress with a tragic past moves into a sleazy, run-down motel and her lesbian co-worker R.C. introduces her to Gulf War veteran Peter, a peculiar, paranoiac drifter and they begin a tentative romance. | Certainly not for everyone...but if you appreciate completely unique and intense cinema...check it out. I am so impressed by Ashley Judd, who I always liked, but had no idea of her range and courage. The film is very disturbing...I would describe it as a dark comedy that gets darker and darker and darker...calling it horror is too limited although there are horror elements to it. It reminds me of Cronenberg or early Polanski (Repulsion). But comparisons don't really do it justice. It's exciting to see that there are directors that still have guts. I was exhilarated and disturbed by the end of this film. I recommend it highly to anyone who wants something different and powerful. |

Saw at Cinevegas film festival - am going to see again at Outfest in July, as I live in LA.
Reminded me of those fun ensemble movies I watched growing up (16 Candles, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Caddyshack). Multiple stories, multiple characters and a lot of laughs. As with most of those multiple-storyline movies, there are always the occasional 'clunker' moments... but those moments are few-and-far between, and are outweighed by a good rhythm to the movie, great comic timing, and a lot of heart.
Also, I think it's safe to say I developed a huuuuuuuuuuge crush on actress Dagney Kerr - who plays suicidal April in the movie. I challenge anyone with a pulse to resist falling under her spell here... Really really lovable, adorable, squeezable and any other '-able' you can think of.
I think most people will find this movie a lot of fun - a rare comedy that is actually really funny. |
