Cursed /Wes Cravens Cursed/ movie comments

"Cursed" is like any other Craven movie; technically well crafted, but with a sloppy narrative that dilutes the impact of the film. I had read terrible things about movie (and its behind-the-scenes troubles), but I liked the movie and I have no idea why so many viewers hated the film. It is a dumb movie, but the whole thing is meant to be dumb and cheesy. Writer Kevin Williamson attempts to do for the werewolf genre, what he did for the slasher (Scream), and the sci-fi genres (The Faculty). It is true that the movie is mostly a "hit and miss" affair, but he almost pulls it off. The problem Williamson has here, is that John Landis (American Werewolf in London) and Joe Dante (The Howling) had already done this in a brilliant manner, so the movie feels derivative. In addition, the movie lacks a good balance of humor and horror, which is what makes this type of movie work. But as a homage to the "B" movies of old Hollywood, I thought the movie worked okay. The low quality special effects are right on the money, and I liked the fact that the movie looks great (get the widescreen version), despite its lowbrow mentality. It is gory (I watched the unrated version), and this is too bad, because it could have been perfect for older kids.
