Date: 2008-02-02 08:57:24 User: Daniel Chapman Bluffmaster is not a bad film at all. It has quite a few good moments and many unexciting bits. Rohan Sippy is definitely a director to watch out for. The direction is quite subtle and I liked the use of background music. Of course the film never really rises above a certain level but is still a good watch. Sippy has captured Mumbai brilliantly. He has not hidden the dirty run down buildings, the mosques, rain soaked streets etc like in Yash Raj and Karan Johar productions. Sure there is the share of yuppie modern eateries and posh places but then thats part of Mumbai I guess. I really want to catch this film on DVD as the print in the theatre was not that great. Abhishek Bachan is very good as the con man, though at times his "intense" act gets on your nerves. I wish he would calm down a bit and relax instead of looking so edgy all the time. Ritesh Deshmukh puts in a good effort but could have been a little less over the top. Boman Irani is bland.He needs to really stem the rot that seems to have set into his performances of late. Nana Patekar is damn cool even though its a role he has done too many times. I wish he would act in more films. Priyanka Chopra looks damn cute(i might have become a fan). The songs were irritating especially Abhisheks dancing. The dialogues are not that consistent but there are enough jokes to keep the audience interested. Overall this is a good watch and I am sure it will look better on DVD(why do all Hindi films look tacky on the big screen, but better on DVD?. ) I read somewhere that Sanjay Dutt was to do Abhisheks role and Abhishek, Riteshs role. That would have been better of course. But still this could just be Abhisheks breakthrough film, the audience in the theatre seemed to enjoy it. If only the film had more bite, a little more life it would have been a huge hit. People who have seen MATCHSTICK MEN and CRIMINAL might understand whats going on right from the beginning.
