| I guess it was 'Braveheart' that started this certain trend in commercial action movies. I seems like some filmmakers think they can get away with anything when the movie is more than three hours long, contains huge battle scenes and obviously is supposed to be important. 'Lord of The Rings', 'Kingdom of Heaven', 'Alexander' and 'Troy' of course. Will anyone honestly claim that they need a movie like 'Troy'? I don't. That's for sure. You can tell already in the opening, where Brad Pitt kill a giant beefcake in two seconds, that the battles in this one will be quite predictable. Not even Wolfgang Petersen's name can save this turkey from being a rock bottom failure. Sure, the costumes, set pieces and CGI are well made, but who cares? We see that in about every Hollywood movie today. The time when good CGI was impressive is over long ago. The adaption of Homer's ancient story is not very successful to tell the truth. (I wont bother to describe it in closer details as I presume everyone knows it already) The gods has been all written out. That is not a bad choice after all, but when doing so, it is very important to fill up the holes they leave. The writer of 'Troy' haven't, and the result is painfully illogical. Worst part is when Priam (Peter O'Toole) visit the Greec camp during the night. Seriously, he just walk into a tent pass the guards all alone like it was nothing! Some of the characters are delivered as sketchy caricatures of themselves. It is impossible to care the least for Agamemnon who is portrayed as an obese, horny, greedy and imperialistic slob with no redeeming values whatsoever. It is easy to see that the whole battle between Greece and Troy tries to be a commentary to the war in Iraq. I am sick and tired of filmmakers being so overly serious and self-important. Whatever happened to the old, simple goal just to tell a good story? Brad Pitt is awful as Achilles and far to old and beefy for the role too. Orlando Bloom isn't very convincing as Paris either, and these two dominates most of the film. Decent actors like Brendan Gleeson haven't got anything worthwhile to work with. Julie Christie's cameo is just pointless. Only light ahead is Eric Bana as Hector. See here is actually a character with some depth who is humanly portrayed as well. Bana is the only good reason to look at 'Troy', how the rest can't live up to him is a mystery. Yet the movie is long. Very, very long. |
