But the biggest problem I had was the fact that it stays with recognizing movies! The director and writers of "The Comebacks" somehow forget to get creative! While I must admit that I laughed at certain scenes,"The Comebacks" could have been so much funnier! The actors forget to deliver their lines seriously and have a straight face throughout the movie! A spoof demands this and that is the main reason why silly jokes work in movies like this! Because of the failure of the cast to do so the jokes never hit their mark! Some scenes take forever and normally in spoofs that doesn't have to be a problem! Take "Naked Gun" for instance! Their is always something happening on screen! In "The Comebacks" they didn't even bother to let stuff happening in the background! Only a couple of factors make this movie worth watching! It still is fun to spot the movies that are made fun off! And Jermaine Williams as Ipod! His parody on Cuba Gooding Jr. as Radio was hilarious! He seemed to be the only one in the cast to get the idea of what a spoof is about! Not entirely bad! This one however spoofs sports movies that try to tug at the heart strings. It is about one of the worst coaches in sports history Lambeau Fields (Koechner). He is given a second chance to make a comeback by coaching a college football team of misfits. From there on in laughs and hit-or-miss jokes ensue as he tries his hardest to become a winner, and lead the team to the championship game. Well let's just say that these spoof movies make good money at the box office. Which is reason enough for Hollywood to keep edging them into theaters. A few were actually pretty funny such as Scary Movie 1, 3, and 4. Although I have not seen the Airplane or Naked Gun series I hear that they are good funny spoofs as well. However there are way too many of these films coming out nowadays, and most of them are just plain unfunny. The duds include Date Movie and Epic Movie (I read terrible reviews), Scary Movie 2, and the dreadful Meet the Spartans which was one of the most painful excuses for a film I've ever seen. The spoof genre has worn out its welcome and really should come to an end. Surprisingly to me I thought The Comebacks was a decent sports parody in the way of this genre. It is in the middle because it's not quite up to par with the good spoofs, but it's not a bad painful spoof either. The jokes in the film are hit-or-miss, some are actually quite funny while others you just don't laugh at. But I found it much better to not laugh than to be in pain watching over the top unfunny gags. When I went to see Meet the Spartans it was a horrible experience, because it was virtually filled with unfunny gags, jokes, and horrendous pop culture references. In fact that was where The Comebacks scored, because although it spoofed recent sports movies it was not full of garbage pop culture references (Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, American Idol e.t.c.). The gags and jokes were straightforward and followed sports movie clich?s quite accordingly. One joke that I really found funny involved a tough athlete and a My Little Pony collection. The gags were not gross-out either, in fact I never felt grossed out watching this movie. The acting was sub par and when the dialogue wasn't about the jokes it wasn't all that good either. But nobody really expects a good script when it comes to a spoof comedy anyway. The Comebacks is a movie where you can just enjoy it for it is, because it really doesn't have to live up to anything. It's a short movie at 84 minutes but it benefits from the running time. Any longer probably would have been too long. Speaking of running times I'll mention Meet the Spartans just one final time. Meet the Spartans was only 65 minutes long without credits, and I paid ten dollars to see that. The Comebacks ends at around the 80 minute mark not counting the end credits. The Comebacks is not the best spoof movie, and not the funniest comedy either. Many are saying this is one of the worst movies of the decade, but that is untrue. I didn't pay to go see this movie, and I'm very sure it would not be worth it anyway. But for a one time viewing it's an okay spoof, and an averagely funny movie at best. I give The Comebacks a 2 out of 4.
