this is a great film. like other reviewers said, nobody expected it to be this good. it is a poetically beautiful movie with cool actors to play out the whole movie appropriately. there are some unnecessary even somehow disgusting scene to portray rose sodomized a cell mate, and i think it's a totally unnecessary appendix that should be deleted. and then, his jail habit obviously took charge again, he first did an anal sex with his sister-in-law then, curiously did a normal sex conduct a moment later. what i worried about and couldn't believe is how could it possible his in-law won't get germs and infected in her urinal system? these two scenes should be edited and partly deleted, because if without these two misconducts, this film would become even greater! because danny 'decker' rose, the character portrayed in this film was a person who was constantly in remorse and felt sorry for what he had done to another human being. by showing these two bad scenes, well, it would degenerate this young man one level lower.
there's also a hidden agenda and an undercurrent that this movie was trying to depict subtly, i.e., the black and white communities were like water and oil, they could never be mixed and adapted to each other. the hatred , the discrimination and the despise to either community were so deep and so strong. it was just hung on a very thin ice that would break up in any moment. this film also subtly showed that most of the white families in that community were mostly white trash, they discriminated their black neighbors so openly and so unreasonably violent, while all the black families were all normal ones, even still having those black young men holding strong grudge to danny rose and his brother(a typical example of white trash). there were moral issue, family value, forgiveness, humanity, racial hatred and tension in this movie and all wonderfully probed. a cool movie that should be appreciated by most people and would make a lot of people to think twice and think deeper and look around their neighborhoods, to all the races around them, to realize what kind of families they actually have and what kind of attitude they treat other people of all races. |

Some people need to get their heads out of their A-S-S's (That's right I'm talking about you Fred Flinstone and other's who think expression of film art is disgusting). Yes there are rather raw homosexual and heterosexual scenes in the movie, but they do have some meaning. The first one was to convey the irony of Donnie's situation. He was a racist in the beginning and he ends up in jail because of it. It's ironic because he ends up banging his BLACK cellmate before he gets out and it's clear their relationship wasn't forced(and plus the guy was in jail for nine years with no sexual gratification other than his hand, you get the idea). He clearly likes and is intrigued by Keith's wife so it's apparent they were about to get it on!! Big Whoop! Disgusting? Only if you have qualms, but come on, it's 2009!! Nothing's new anymore!!
But besides all that, the sex scenes weren't really the main focal point of the story anyway. In fact they had no real relevance other than to add atmosphere and to be frank I thought the director/producer was trying to keep it real. Donnie was a lonely person in prison and outside prison, so it was inevitable that he would run into sexual situations to develop as a character. Truthfully, the film was really about forgiveness and the irony of social struggles within a community of people. Lot of sad moments, but a great film nonetheless. |
